Modern Country Farmhouse
an interior view with midcentury modern furniture and northern wide wood planks on the floor
Located on a quiet road with the breathtaking backdrop of Georgian Bay, this modern farmhouse is more than just a residence; it's a testament to architectural brilliance and natural harmony.

Designed by the talented Architect Steve Hamelin based on the vision and concept of the homeowners Regan Hoskin and Nancy Rutherford, this residence seamlessly marries neoclassical elegance with contemporary aesthetics, creating a haven of beauty, warmth, and everlasting memories. Northern Wide Plank’s reclaimed engineered oak flooring seamlessly blends the contrasting design styles found in the home, creating decided cohesion throughout.

The house, adorned with large 2-storey windows, invites the outdoors inside, framing picturesque views that form the canvas of everyday life. Stepping in, visitors are greeted by a striking L-shaped staircase, complete with custom stair treads––which match the Wolf Creek wide plank flooring found on the main level and create a seamless experience throughout the home––and flanked with metal railings, creating a modern industrial contrast to the surrounding natural beauty. Follow the path downstairs and find a fully open basement, intentionally designed with uncommonly high 9’ ceilings and oversized windows to make the space feel like a main floor.

Inside, the fusion of neoclassical elegance and contemporary aesthetics is evident. Neoclassical furniture and lighting adorn bedrooms and dining areas, creating an atmosphere of timeless sophistication. The living room, with its grand vaulted ceilings and a striking two-storey fireplace, exudes drama. Neutral tones are accentuated by pops of blue and grey, creating a coastal ambiance in this stately space.

“We wanted the house to feel large, with a small footprint,” explains Hoskin, “the high vaulted ceilings help to balance the grand architectural design, with the intimate spaces found throughout the home.”

The main floor bedroom, a sanctuary of luxury, boasts vaulted ceilings akin to the rest of the house. Its ensuite bathroom, featuring a deep soaker tub beneath a huge window overlooking the private backyard, creates a connection with nature while ensuring privacy. Stunning double doors add a touch of regality, perfectly blending with modern elements and creating a sense of grandeur.

In the heart of the home lies the kitchen, a culinary haven designed for a gourmet home chef. The large black island with soapstone countertop takes center stage, contrasting elegantly with stark white cabinets and state-of-the-art stainless-steel appliances, including an 8-burner gas range stove and 42” French door fridge. Central to the kitchen's design is the use of Northern Wide Plank’s Wolf Creek flooring from the Artifax collection of reclaimed oak. This rich, brown-toned flooring not only graces the floors but also adorns the ceiling, creating a truly unique and intimate ambiance.

Hoskin’s vision of harmonizing timeless classicism with modern comforts has resulted in a welcoming space, perfect for extended family stays and endless entertainment. The farmhouse’s design, a collaboration with architect Steve Hamelin and a team of local tradespeople, seamlessly blends indoor and outdoor entertainment, creating inviting porches and shared spaces, alongside private retreats. With the intention of creating a gathering place to unwind after a day of skiing, hiking, or exploring the stunning Georgian Bay region, spaces like the additional guest house, secondary living room, and rooftop yoga porch fit perfectly with the overall vision. The roof's stunning design, a product of creative solutions and collaboration, also adds an extra layer of structural elegance to the house, falling back on the somewhat utilitarian architectural style that blends beautifully with the more traditional grandeur of the neoclassical design elements, while maintaining the integrity of a true farmhouse aesthetic.

Throughout this breathtaking residence, Northern Wide Plank’s Wolf Creek engineered reclaimed oak wide plank flooring establishes a consistent theme of warmth. Its rich brown tones and abundant character merge neoclassical and contemporary design visions, transforming the house into a cohesive masterpiece.

When it came to sourcing materials, the preference was clear, “We really wanted to use as many North American-made products as possible, Canadian made is even better,” stated homeowner and designer Regan Hoskin. From the Canadian Mennonite cabinetry from Millbank and Riverside Millwork doors and trim found on the interior and exterior windows and doors from inline products, Northern Wide Plank’s reclaimed oak Wolf Creek flooring fit right in with the theme of Canadian craftsmanship excellence. Its unique knots, varied widths, and lengths added character to the space, ensuring a timeless appeal that resonates with the overall design vision. Every inch of this home radiates unique splendor and a distinct vision, a testament to the synergy of nature, design, and craftsmanship.
