Understanding Reactive Stain Products from Northern Wide Plank

At Northern Wide Plank, we use a variety of colour treatments to achieve our one-of-a-kind products. Each colour is the result of a unique combination of the surface texture—whether sanded or planed—colour treatment, and hardwax oil.

Some of our most striking and natural-looking products are created using a Reactive Stain colour treatment. This process involves natural compounds, such as lye or smoked/fumed minerals, that react with the wood’s tannins to produce a rich, aged appearance. The result is a natural variation in tone from plank to plank, giving each product its own distinct character.

It’s important to understand that the colour of a Reactive Stain floor will continue to evolve over a specified period of time. Depending on the specific product, it typically takes 2 to 3 months for the final tone to fully develop and mature.

These natural variations and gradual changes are intentional—and they’re part of what makes a Reactive Stain floor from Northern Wide Plank truly unique.

Before purchasing, we encourage you to speak with your Northern Wide Plank Flooring Specialist to ensure you have a full understanding of the product and its characteristics.

Note: All Northern Wide Plank Reactive Stain products are identified in the product specifications under the “Treatment” section.
